With the T20 World Cup underway, there is much contention as to who will win the ultimate prize in November. Australia are the reigning champions, having won the title in the last T20 tournament in 2021 in Dubai against New Zealand. It was Australia’s maiden T20 World Cup title. This list will show the teams that have won the tournament throughout the years and give some information as to why they have a realistic chance to win the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup.
Australia
With Australia hosting the tournament the Australian squad has the home-ground advantage as well as being the reigning champions of the T20 World Cup. Of the 7 tournaments they have so far been involved in, the closest they got to winning was in 2010 where they finished 2nd, losing to England. This doesn’t mean they can’t follow up their win with another one, but it does come with a great deal of confrontation from other formidable teams in the league. The Aussies will be keen to maintain the championship, but they know that this will not be an easy task.
India
India was the first country to win the T20 tournament back in 2007 against Pakistan and has qualified for the 2022 games, looking to reclaim the glory that they worked so hard for all those years ago. India has had a difficult couple of years, but the betting odds T20 World Cup situation is still looking positive for the team. India has always been a team that commands respect and their skill on the pitch is not viewed lightly when it comes to other teams who play against them.
England
Widely known as the creators of the sport of cricket, England has been met with some friendly but rough contention over the years. The Ashes are a prime example of this where they play Australia every two years in order to keep the Ashes on their home turf. Unfortunately for England, Australia has the Ashes for now which is further propelled by Australia holding the current title of T20 World Cup champions, it is obvious that the English squad will want to claim a victory over their long-time rivals.
Sri Lanka
Among the highest-rated teams in the world in the cricket community, Sri Lanka is not a team that can be dismissed easily no matter whom they are playing against or which form of cricket they are involved in. They won the T20 World Cup in 2014 in Bangladesh against India by 6 wickets which is no small feat and are definitely looking to secure another win in 2022. The current team has a tried-and-true line up which will no doubt be a serious adversary for the other teams they go up against in the 2022 T20 series.
West Indies
The only team to win the T20 World Cup twice so far (2012, 2016), the West Indies have been a powerhouse team for decades in both ODI and test matches. Some of the best cricket players in the history of the sport have played for the West Indies including Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose, Viv Richards, Michael Holding, and Courtney Walsh. The squad only managed to get to round 2 in 2021 but have qualified for the 2022 tournament and are looking to turn their luck around and prove to the cricketing world that they still have what it takes to win a T20 World Cup.
