What is Roulette?
Roulette is essentially a game of prediction. The aim of a game of Roulette is to simply place a wager down on what you think the outcome of the game will be.
Originating in France in the 1700s, Roulette has travelled around the world and been played by millions of players over the centuries – not bad considering the main component of the game, the wheel, was created by mistake!

Although originating in France, the American version of Roulette is actually the original gameplay format, containing both a single zero and a double zero on the wheel and the table. The European version, however, only contains the single zero element resulting in a lower house edge.
How to play
A game of Roulette consists of a few elements:
- A Roulette wheel
- A corresponding table
- Betting chips
- A dealer/croupier
- A small white ball, also known as a pill
To play, whether that be online or in person at a casino, the betting window will first be opened allowing players to place any bets they wish onto the table, within the boxes that correspond with their prediction for the game. The window will then close and no further bets will be allowed to be played.
The wheel will begin to spin and the pill is dropped into play. After bouncing around the wheel, the ball will land in one of the wheel’s 37 pockets, 38 if playing the American version. Once the wheel has come to a complete stop, the winning pocket is announced.
How to place bets
With the table layout representing the wheel pockets’ numbers, colours and values, placing a bet on where you predict the pill to land is easy to do – simply place a betting chip(s) on the box within the table layout that matches your prediction.
There are many bets you can place including two types called inside and outside. An inside bet is when you place a wager on the number elements of the table layout. An outside bet is when you place a wager on boxes that are outside the main numbered layout of the table.
An example of an inside bet is a straight bet. A straight bet is when a player places a betting chip(s) on one number.
An example of an outside bet is an odd / even bet. This is when a player places a betting chip(s) on the box containing the word odd or even. The odd box represents every odd number that appears on the wheel, and the even box represents the even numbers.
