Pergola
A pergola is something that you can throw together quite inexpensively. It’ll provide some shelter when the weather isn’t quite so hospitable, allowing you to use your patio later into the year. Combine it with the right patio heater, and you might be using your patio for parties all year round.
Create a candle centrepiece
A firepit makes for a great addition to the patio – but you might not want to invest in something quite so large or cumbersome. Plus, if you’ve got small children or pets wandering around, a firepit might not be something you want to deal with.
A candle centrepiece is a great way to add a little bit of visual warmth without having to resort to something bigger. Go for an odd number of candles to create a sense of balance, and perhaps make them differently shaped, too.
Build a corner sofa
If you’re really going to be using your patio as an outdoor living area, then it makes sense to take the seating seriously. If you aren’t able to sit comfortably, then you’ll be disinclined to spend too much time in this part of the property. You can build your own corner sofa if you have basic carpentry skills – or you can look for something that’s ready-made, or pay someone to build something custom.
Update the Lighting
The way that your outdoor space is lit will make a huge difference to your experience out there. Look for solar lights – these will drink in the sunlight during the daytime and stay lit throughout the night. Consequently, you won’t need to worry about threading cables, replacing batteries, or thinking about your impact on the natural environment.
Add a Stock Pool
The average cost of a pool in your back garden can run up into the tens of thousands of pounds. If you live in a country that’s warm all year round, then this might be a worthwhile investment. An alternative comes in the form of a stock pool – which is made from a galvanised steel tank of the kind traditionally used to protect stock on farms.
Inexpensive, practical, and easy to set up, they’re a great addition to even smaller back gardens. Plus, if you eventually decide that you don’t like your pool any more, you can sell it on. You can’t do that with a traditional fixed pool.
