How Online Dating Changed the Way We Build Relationships

There was a time when asking a couple how they met usually produced a fairly predictable answer.

They worked together. They went to the same school. A friend introduced them. They noticed each other at a party, a bar, a wedding, or maybe in the coffee shop they both visited every morning.

Today, the answer can be much shorter.

    “We met online.”

And nobody at the table finds that particularly interesting anymore.

That may be the biggest sign of how much online dating has changed relationships. It isn’t simply that millions of people use dating sites and apps. It’s that meeting someone online has moved from being something people occasionally felt the need to explain to being an ordinary part of modern life.

Research bears that out. A Stanford-led study found that meeting online had overtaken meeting through friends as the most common way heterosexual couples in the United States met. The researchers identified the shift at around 2013.

But online dating hasn’t only changed where couples meet. It has changed who they can meet, how quickly relationships begin, what we expect from potential partners and, perhaps most noticeably, how much choice we think we have.

We No Longer Date Only Within Our Social Circle

For most of history, romance was surprisingly local.

People met people who were already somewhere in their orbit. A coworker knew a friend. A neighbour had an unmarried cousin. Someone from school introduced someone from university.

There was an invisible boundary around the dating pool, and that boundary was largely determined by everyday life.

Online dating knocked a hole straight through it.

A person who works from home, has a small group of friends and rarely goes to bars can still meet dozens of people they would never encounter otherwise. Someone who has just moved to a new city doesn’t necessarily need to spend a year building a social network before dating.

This is more important than it initially sounds.

Friends used to act as romantic gatekeepers. They made introductions, recommended people and sometimes warned us away from terrible ideas. Online dating removed much of that middle layer. The Stanford research described this process as the internet increasingly displacing friends and other traditional intermediaries in the way couples meet.

Now two complete strangers can find each other without having a single person in common.

That’s a pretty radical social change for something we mostly experience while looking at a phone.

The First Date Now Starts Before the First Date

People who met at a party 30 years ago didn’t know very much about each other.

That was part of the point.

You talked. You asked questions. You discovered things.

Today, by the time two people meet for coffee, they may already know each other’s jobs, hobbies, age, taste in music, travel habits and whether they own a suspicious number of photographs taken on mountain tops.

Then there are social media accounts.

It isn’t unusual for someone to look up a potential date before meeting. The internet has effectively created a new stage of courtship between introduction and first date.

This can be useful. A little information makes it easier to decide whether meeting someone is worth your time. It can also provide a basic safety check.

But it changes the first date.

Instead of beginning with “Who is this person?”, the question sometimes becomes “Does this person match the version I’ve already constructed in my head?”

Those are not quite the same thing.

Choosing the Platform Has Become Part of Dating

As online dating matured, it stopped being one big category.

Different platforms developed different audiences and expectations. Some people are looking for marriage. Others want companionship, casual dating or simply the opportunity to meet people outside their usual social circles.

    Age matters as well.

Dating at 22 isn’t necessarily the same activity as dating at 42 or 62. People later in life may have children, previous marriages, established careers and very clear ideas about what they do and don’t want.

That has made researching the platform itself a normal part of the process.

People increasingly want to know who uses a service and what kind of experience it offers before investing their time in creating a profile. Reading independent resources such as dating com reviews can be a useful way to get a better sense of a platform before deciding whether it fits what you’re looking for.

In other words, we’ve added another decision before choosing a date: choosing where to look for one.

We Have More Choice — Maybe Too Much

Online dating’s greatest advantage may also be its strangest problem.

    Choice.

In ordinary life, you might meet a handful of potentially interesting single people over several months. Open a dating app and suddenly there can be hundreds.

    At first, this feels fantastic.

    Then something odd happens.

When another possible match is always one swipe away, it can become difficult to stop searching. A perfectly pleasant conversation may seem less exciting because another profile looks slightly more interesting.

Pew Research Center found Americans divided on this abundance of choice: about four in ten said dating sites and apps offer too many options, while a similar share felt they provide about the right amount.

    It’s easy to see why.

Human beings aren’t particularly good at comparing endless possibilities. We can end up treating people like products: checking specifications, comparing alternatives and wondering whether a better option will appear tomorrow.

Relationships, unfortunately, don’t work very well as comparison shopping.

At some point you have to stop evaluating possibilities and actually get to know somebody.

Distance Doesn’t Mean What It Used To

    Another major change is geographical.

A person living in a small town once had a fairly small dating pool unless they regularly travelled elsewhere. Today, they can meet someone in another city—or another country—without leaving home.

That has made long-distance relationships easier to begin.

Video calls, instant messaging and cheap digital communication mean two people can become part of each other’s daily routines long before they live in the same place.

For some couples, that creates opportunities that simply wouldn’t have existed a generation ago.

    It also introduces complicated questions.

How long can a relationship remain entirely digital? Who eventually moves? When does online intimacy need to become ordinary, physical, day-to-day life?

Technology solves the problem of meeting across distance.

It doesn’t necessarily solve what comes next.

Online Dating Made Intentions More Explicit

Offline romance can be wonderfully ambiguous.

It can also be maddeningly ambiguous.

Is the person talking to you at a party flirting or just friendly? Is your coworker interested? Should you ask? Would asking make things awkward?

Dating platforms remove at least one uncertainty.

Everyone is there, in some broad sense, because they’re open to meeting someone.

The details still vary enormously, of course. But profiles can make intentions more visible from the beginning. Someone can say they want a serious relationship, casual dating, marriage or something else.

That doesn’t guarantee honesty or compatibility.

It does make certain conversations easier to have earlier.

And people are using online dating for serious relationships, not merely casual encounters. Pew reported in 2023 that one in ten partnered U.S. adults had met their current spouse or partner through a dating site or app. Among partnered adults under 30, the figure was one in five.

Those numbers make the old distinction between “online relationships” and “real relationships” increasingly pointless.

Online is simply where many real relationships start.

    It Has Changed Rejection Too

Not every change has made dating easier.

Before online dating, rejection was usually fairly clear. You asked someone out and they said no. A date didn’t lead to another one. Someone stopped calling.

Digital communication has created more ambiguous versions.

    Ghosting is the obvious example.

A conversation can simply end. Someone who was sending messages every evening disappears without explanation.

There is no argument, goodbye or formal rejection. Just silence.

It’s easy to criticize this behaviour, but the structure of online dating helps explain why it happens. When people are simultaneously talking to several potential matches, each individual conversation can feel less consequential.

That’s convenient for the person disappearing.

Not so much for the person staring at the last message wondering what happened.

Safety Became Part of the Conversation

Meeting strangers online also introduced risks that shouldn’t be ignored.

Fake profiles, scams, harassment and unwanted messages are genuine problems. In Pew’s 2022 survey, 48% of people who had used dating platforms said they’d experienced at least one of four unwanted behaviours examined by researchers, ranging from persistent unwanted contact to unsolicited explicit content or threats.

This has created its own set of modern dating habits.

People meet in public places. They tell friends where they’re going. Some share their location. Video calls before a first meeting have become common.

None of this sounds especially romantic.

    It is, however, sensible.

The interesting thing is how quickly these behaviours have become normal etiquette rather than unusual precautions.

    The Technology Eventually Disappears

For all the discussion about algorithms, profiles and swiping, successful online dating eventually reaches a point where the online part stops mattering.

    Two people meet.

They have dinner. They discover annoying habits. They meet each other’s friends. They argue about holidays. One person steals the other person’s side of the bed.

In other words, they build a relationship in much the same messy way couples always have.

That’s worth remembering because technology can make modern dating appear more revolutionary than it really is.

Online dating has dramatically changed access. It has expanded our social circles, made introductions easier and allowed relationships to begin between people who might never have occupied the same room.

What it hasn’t done is automate intimacy.

A profile can introduce you to someone.

An algorithm can suggest that you might be compatible.

A messaging system can make the first conversation easier.

After that, you’re largely on your own.

And perhaps that’s why online dating has become so ordinary. Beneath all the technology, it still leads to the same old human problem: two people trying to figure out whether they want to keep seeing each other.

The route to that moment has changed enormously.

The relationship itself still has to be built by hand.
