Lana Del Rey has been pretty prolific in her music over the last few years, with three new albums since 2020 and nine since 2010 when her eponymous debut album was released, catapulting her into the limelight and aligning her as one of the most extraordinary vocal talents of the last few decades.
Her recent album, Blue Banisters, was another example of her talent and astonishing voice, while a recent collaboration with Father John Misty on Buddy’s Rendezvous is truly fantastic.
But while we see Lana Del Rey in the spotlight quite frequently, how much do we actually know about her? Well, here are four things you may never have known about the artist…
She had a difficult start to life
The singer didn’t have the best of starts to her life and during her teenage years suffered from alcohol addiction. She was drinking heavily as a 12-year-old and by the time she was 15, rather than being sent to a rehab clinic, she was packed off to boarding school to get clean.
She’s spoken out about that time and not only has told of her loved ones dying being the reason she turned to alcohol, but also much of the Born To Die album is based on that period of her life.
She started her career with a different stage name
We could have known her as May Jailer, while her actual name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, but it was Lana Del Rey she settled on. She first started performing as May Jailer back in 2006, with her first public performance coming while she was still studying.
It was at Fordham University, majoring in philosophy, that she released her first album under her previous stage name, with an album entitled Sirens.
Video Games is the Song of the Decade
Video Games was the first song Lana Del Rey released under her new stage name, and it went on to receive over 20 million views on YouTube in just six months (it now has over 302 million), and such was the size of the hit it was named the best song of the decade at the Q Awards in London.
Not bad for your first single!
She loves football!
Lana Del Rey is a big fan of sports and is a Liverpool fan. So she’s probably having the time of her life watching her beloved club under Jurgen Klopp right now.
