Pink isn’t meant to be a perverted innuendo, although Pink goes to Hollywood could definitely be a good title for a particular leather-sofa talent show. No, this is of course about the pink panther. I really hated the cartoons, will these SNES roms games developed by TecMagik and developed in 1993 be able to offer me a better experience?
Atmosphere / Story
The plot in Pink goes to Hollywood of games SNES Roms turns out to be very simple but not necessarily logical. The pink panther has painted the big Hollywood letters pink and is now being chased through all the Hollywood studios by some directors.
The panther goes through various settings, similar to Animaniacs. It does give the player a free choice of where to go first, but it’s not well thought out or laid out like Animaniacs.
Graphic
It has to be admitted that the protagonist reflects the animated cartoon character quite well. However, the rest of the opponents do not. These do not fit the world of the pink panther stylistically, or in any other conceivable way. It’s not uncommon for enemies to be items like meatballs or shoes, and recognizing them as such requires context-specific interpretation.
The environment looks very average, but it does the job. The backgrounds remain consistently little noteworthy. Unfortunately, the entire level design is not very creative and is even quite empty in places. Fortunately, everything is running smoothly.
Game Mechanics / Gameplay
And this is where the shit starts to steam. The panther can’t do anything except jump, run, and use his paint gun, which has a bad range, and of course, he can do one thing particularly well, namely die. It’s good that you can find coins that open up shortcuts or other things.
The horrible level design in Panther goes to Hollywood roms is fortunately very individual on every level, but every time individually shitty. As a result, you constantly get into situations where you have to make blind leaps into the unknown. Or you go through doors that teleport you to the other end of the level, often ending up in an opponent and dying. By the way, you die very quickly, because the panther is dead after the second hit. I haven’t encountered any boss fights. Also, there may be more shots coming from out of sight, which just isn’t fair.
Music and sound effects
If you imagine the sound effects of a bad uninspired cheap game and close your eyes for a moment, you can hear the sound effects of Pink going to Hollywood roms. These often don’t fit in with what’s happening.
At least you get to hear the well-known melody, which even sounds quite acceptable. The rest of the soundtrack is also stylistically very similar, so jazz-oriented but unfortunately just as slow. These laid-back melodies don’t really lend themselves to a jump and run but at least they sound passable.
Steering
When the shoddy way you run or jump becomes the #1 killer, you know something is wrong.
Running must be avoided, otherwise, you will run into opponents. But as soon as you have to, you will quickly notice the slip factor when landing, because this will bring you many unnecessary deaths at the latest in the Wild West level.
Fun factor
Pretty much from the first minute, Pink going to Hollywood didn’t give me any pleasure. The constant dying due to the slippery controls, the constant spawning of enemies and projectiles that you can’t dodge… and the music that makes you kind of sleepy are hideous. An average platformer like Asterix is much more fun.
Rating and Facts
I had never really understood the series at the time and was bored. In this respect, Pink goes to Hollywood and is not inferior to the series. The game even ups the ante and frustrates the player with wishy-washy controls that take some getting used to, but what’s the point?
The best thing about the game is probably the music and the character model of the protagonist, the makers screwed up everything else. If at least the level design were appealing, but it’s even more chaotic than in TechToRoms.Com and therefore a no-go. It doesn’t surprise me that TecMagik went under the same year they released this game.
